A transponder key is an aftermarket option that requires programming inorder to work to a vehicle. Also known as a chip key or ignition key, which offers a high level of security. If your car is equipped with an immobilizer then only a programmed key can start the ignition in your vehicle. Programming or reprogramming of your chip keys can be done in just minutes from your vehicle using just the key itself but some chip keys requires a scan tool and locksmiths or dealers have it.
Below are the steps that are commonly performed to program a chip key but that doesnt mean that it works to all vehicles, especially if that said vehicle is not on board programmable which requires a special tool:
?Put your chip key in the ignition then turn it to the ON position.
?Let the key stay in the ignition while its in ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds, then turn it back to the OFF position.
?Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times, leaving the key in the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds a total of three times. Turn the key to the OFF position after the third time.
?Turn the key back to the ON position to complete the programming sequence. You can now use the newly programmed key to start your car.
