Some DEI systems use more than one type of remote. If you don't have an existing remote to compare to then you can look at the date code on the receiver.
All DEI alarms where either stamped or imbedded with a manufacturers Date Code both on the outer main brain case, and inside the main case. The Date Code tells when the unit was manufactured which determines the proper replacement remote needed that is compatible with your system. Usually there is a white sticker that has, for example, OK/8F. The "OK" means that the unit has passed inspection. The "8" signifies that the unit was manufactured in 1998 and the "F" signifies the month of June. Below is charts to determine the Year and Month the unit was manufactured.

Note: GM has remade this remote many times. They originally had memory #1 and #2 remotes. The purpose was for vehicles with seat memory. In reality it was ridiculous because the order that you program them determines which is #1 and #2. The numbers on the back were just for reference. In 2006 GM decided to discontinue using #1 and #2 and they started making un-numbered remotes. GM's current part number for this remote is 21997127. If you go to a GM dealer parts department you will get the new number remote no matter what remote you have now. All the remotes with the part numbers listed above are identical inside and in function so we mix them together.
The manufacturer of the rubber remote covers has made a significant change to a couple of their products. It has caused a bit of dissappointment with customers, but it really shouldn't. Here's the issue:

First, the rubber covers had holes for each button as pictured above. Then the manufacturer changed it to have less holes as pictured below.

It really doesn't affect the usage of this product. You can still see where to press the trunk button by the raised trunk logo on the rubber cover, as pictured below.

We ordered some XT-11 remotes from Autopage and they sent us the XT-12. At first we thought it was a mistake but when we called to find out it was explained that the XT-11 is discontinued. However, the XT-12 is a compatible replacement.

PROX, Smart, Intelligent are all synonyms for remote keyless ignition. Names for this type of system are PROX or PROXIMITY ENTRY, SMART ENTRY or SMART ACCESS, INTELLIGENT ENTRY among others. In moderate to high end vehicle models is where these systems can be found.
How does Remote Keyless Ignition (RKI) work?
The user has a remote that is a key. Usually there is an emergency key blade that slides within the remote for safe keeping but it is not an ignition key. The vehicle has no ignition cylinder for a key to turn – it has push button start. The vehicle can detect the remote while it is in your pocket or purse. When you approach the door it unlocks for you. When you depress the brake pedal and press start the engine starts. On some models, when you walk away the vehicle may lock as well.

Most vehicles come with a factory keyless entry system which includes two factory keyless entry remotes. Most of the time, the factory system is only for keyless entry and does not include alarm or remote start.
There is something called an aftermarket add-on which will add selected features to your factory keyless entry system and it will function using your factory keyless remote. The most common aftermarket add-on systems are for alarm or remote start. There are also window roll-down and trunk pop capabilities on some add-on systems.
The following video is a demonstration from one alarm shop of an add-on alarm system they put into a vehicle. Note that not all add-on alarm systems work exaclty this way. The system they installed does function this way but there are other systems made by many different manufacturers including DEI, Omega, and Crimestopper, among others.
